Silage and Pasture
$55 per adult - participating teenagers free (sorry no children under 12) 10am onwards The large silage-making equipment owned by most commercial contractors can be just too big for the small spaces of a lifestyle block (I know I tried it - see right!), and the resulting large bales are impossible to handle without specialist machinery and are too big for just a few stock, resulting in expensive spoilage. So while mowing the spring grass in my orchard and lawn, I got to thinking: "Why can't I make my own small-scale silage?" It took a bit of research and a couple of years of experimenting but I now make quality silage at a scale to suit my lifestyle block. There are some basic principles to making silage, which we have enlarged upon and modified to maximise the nutrient content, suit easy handling and provide tasty supplements for a house cow and a beefie through a summer drought or winter feed shortage. Come and get active and help us put down our spring silage. After lunch tour our property looking at regenerative pasture management, grazing systems, mixed pastures and fodder trees. Note: We do need fine weather and good grass to make good silage. If weather conditions are adverse, course may be postponed until 10 November. You will be actively involved with stomping the silage, it is a fun group activity (kiwi version of grape stomping?) .
